Design Trends 2021
I’ve been reading up on design trends for 2021, and I’m happy to report that it’s looking good! With the year we’ve all had, people are feeling cautiously optimistic for the year ahead. I’d say we’re all ready for life to feel lighter and positive, to let go of that onerous vibe that has become the norm. That said, here are a few of my favorite forecasted trends.
Elements of Nature
Many of us have become reacquainted with nature during the pandemic. Being outdoors has been a safe and healthy diversion. To be among trees in the sunshine and fresh air is soothing, and helps us to feel rooted in uncertain times. My favorite outdoor activities have been walking in the woods and watching the full moon! Some ways that nature will be carried over into design is through muted, earth-tone color palettes. Look for grainy textures, leafy patterns, landscape illustrations and nature photography.
Honesty & Authenticity
How refreshing is it to think that the truth is making a comeback? Companies want to be trusted by people. One way to earn that trust is through nostalgic typefaces. Serif, typewriter and retro fonts that have been around a long time bring with them memories of better days. Simpler data visualizations and geometric shapes will also help demonstrate a relatable, honest tone.
Celebration of Diversity
The ongoing discussions about race, gender and class will be reflected by an increased diversity in design. Unique characters from all cultures are being depicted in marketing collateral, and designers have the ability to communicate diversity through strong typographic messaging and visuals. It would be amazing if 2021 became a celebration of identity in every form!
These are just a few of many upcoming design trends. I look forward to utilizing them in my own work and seeing them in the design world.
